Coriander (koriander in Dutch) or cilantro, is one of the few plants that I have in my vegetable garden here in Belgium. Growing up in Asia, I see this herb used most often in dishes prepared for Chinese feast days. My family does not consume it on a daily basis. Even so, I grew up thinking that the coriander is just a small time Asian herb.
It was not until I lived in San Francisco that I realized the importance and heavy use of this herb (vegetable?) in Vietnamese, Cambodian and Mexican dishes. And to my surprise, I recently found out that coriander is used in Belgian wheat beer witbier!
This not an easy plant to grow in a warm humid Malaysia. Thus, it is not cheap. It blows my mind that it is growing like weed in my garden. Moments like this makes me feel like a million bucks.
