Managerial conferences, books, entrepreneur speeches, motivational seminars, and people that we look up to… they all say it: Hire someone smarter than you!
Well, I have been on the hiring end and think this is indeed a smart move. A smart subordinate/partner will not require much hand holding. Don’t think that you can sit back and not lift a finger though. You are after all the hiring manager and one of your responsibilities is to make sure that your smart people do not turn stupid and lazy on you.
Unfortunately, many hiring managers have shown fear and reluctance when trying to implement this idea. Maybe I’ll lose my job to this smarter person? Will this person overtake me in the company? I will appear a lesser individual if I hire a star worker. Ah… people can be narrow minded and selfish, no? I assure you, a good hire reflects well on the manager for a long long time and a bad hire sucks big time.
